Chicago has a wide array of nightclubs and bars to choose from. It is the USA’s third largest city after all! You won’t find it hard to find your type of hotspot. What makes Chicago unique to the rest of America is that it is home to two of the world’s most widely listened genres of music. This is reflected in the types of bars and nightclubs to choose from.
The blues originated in the 19th Century and, while similar to jazz in some ways, was a bit rough around the edges when compared to it. It may have been born in New Orleans but it quickly moved to Chicago. Blues originating in the windy city is known as ‘urban blues’. Due to the music’s history in the city, there are numerous blues clubs and most the world’s best known blues musicians have played in Chicago at some stage in their career.
The other music type to have originated here is ‘house music’, a variation of dance music. In the early 1980’s Chicago had control over the pressing plants (for vinyl) in the city, thus had access to many different records found nowhere else in the country. As the city gave birth to this type of dance music, many of America’s best dance clubs can be found in Chicago.
The Loop, and anywhere in the general downtown district, is where you will find most nightclubs. Some districts a little further out from the city centre, such as River North and Greektown, also have many to choose from so don’t be afraid to venture a little bit further away from the city centre.
